Salina Fair Housing Seminar to Continue Despite Loss of Federal Funding

Salina's Human Relations Commission will proceed with its 2026 Fair Housing Seminar despite losing federal funding that previously allowed organizers to bring in national speakers.

The annual event is scheduled for Friday, April 24, 2026, at OCCK's training room, city officials announced during the Commission's December 9, 2025, meeting.

"We did not get HUD funding for outreach," a staff member told commissioners. "So it is on the sponsorships for what we have, and we're not able to bring some of the out-of-state speakers we were able to when we had that funding."

Despite the setback, several speakers have already confirmed their participation. Professor Michelle Ewart from Washburn University, who missed last year's seminar due to scheduling conflicts, has reserved the day. A city staff member described her as "very astute in a lot of these civil rights areas," adding that "she's been one of our favorites to work with."

Organizers are also working to secure representatives from regional housing authorities to discuss Section 8 housing. The local housing authority cannot currently commit due to a leadership transition.

Additionally, a representative from the state's Continuum of Care program is expected to present on CANRENT, described as "like an Airbnb for rentals" that connects landlords with Section 8 voucher holders. "Getting more people engaged in accepting vouchers for Section 8 is the premise behind this, and making it easier for landlords," the staff member explained.

The Commission has sent sponsorship letters and plans to follow up this month to secure additional funding. Ticket prices will remain unchanged from previous years.

The seminar typically features four to five sessions. With three confirmed so far, the Commission is seeking suggestions for additional speakers.
