Industrial Waste Reduction Identified As Key Target for Waste Diversion Efforts

Industrial waste has been identified as a significant target for waste diversion efforts, according to discussions at a recent Solid Waste Management Committee meeting.

Committee members highlighted that industrial waste represents a substantial portion of materials entering the landfill, with one member noting, "That's where all your weight is."

A representative from Great Plains Manufacturing, shared how the company has dramatically reduced landfill contributions by implementing recycling programs. "When I started my position, the first thing I did was look at what we're sending to the landfill. Then I started looking into ways to remove that," he explained.

The company previously sent steel dust, steel shot, and filter sludge from industrial wastewater treatment to the landfill—approximately 80 tons annually—but now recycles these materials through Midwest Scrap Metals.

Committee members expressed concern that other local industries might not be aware of recycling opportunities. "If these other industries in the city are not doing that, they're just sending everything out and they're not aware of other opportunities. That's a big problem," one member stated.

The committee discussed creating educational materials specifically targeting industrial waste generators.

"Maybe on those things you're adding, we could add industrial waste," suggested a committee member, emphasizing the need for outreach and public education.

A 2022 waste study revealed that approximately 22% of landfill materials are compostable, including yard waste (8%) and food waste (14%), presenting another significant opportunity for diversion.

The committee also discussed other waste reduction strategies, including e-waste collection, household hazardous waste disposal options, and potential landfill tours to educate the public about waste management.
