Police Investigating Two Vehicle Thefts Reported in Salina Neighborhoods

Salina police are investigating two reported vehicle thefts that occurred over the Christmas holiday weekend in nearby neighborhoods.

The first theft was reported on Christmas morning at approximately 10 a.m. in the 1400 block of Teakwood. The vehicle was identified as a 2011 gray Hyundai Sonata, valued at approximately $4,000, with Kansas license plate 2454ALC. According to police, the vehicle owner retained possession of the keys, indicating the theft did not occur due to misplaced or stolen keys. As of the time of the report, the vehicle had not been recovered.

A second vehicle theft was reported in the 1300 block of Winona Street. That incident is believed to have occurred between 7 p.m. on December 27 and 9 a.m. on December 28. The stolen vehicle was described as a 2017 white Kia Sportage, bearing Kansas license plate 7468ACE. Police confirmed the keys were not left inside the vehicle.

Investigators noted the proximity of the two thefts but stated that a direct connection between the incidents has not been confirmed. Officers also discussed broader trends involving thefts of Hyundai and Kia vehicles, citing longstanding vulnerabilities in ignition systems on certain model years, particularly older models, which have made them frequent targets for vehicle theft.

Both cases remain under investigation. Anyone with information related to either vehicle theft is encouraged to contact the Salina Police Department or Crime Stoppers.
