Soil Cleanup Complete at Former Schilling Air Force Base Plume B Site
Cleanup of contaminated soil at the former Schilling Air Force Base has reached an important milestone, with remediation work in the Plume B Soil Source Area now complete.
The Salina Public Entities, working with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), excavated contaminated soil from the source area and conducted extensive testing throughout the process. Sampling continued until tests confirmed no contamination remained at the source location.
The excavated soil was disposed of at the Salina Landfill under KDHE authorization. The excavation was then backfilled with clean soil from an off-site source, graded, and reseeded to restore the area.
Ongoing Monitoring and Future Work
Environmental monitoring continues across the former base property. Groundwater and indoor air quality are regularly tested to ensure residents and workers near the site are not exposed to harmful contaminant levels. This monitoring provides critical data to guide the cleanup process and protect public health.
The Salina Public Entities continue working with KDHE to plan and implement additional remedial actions outlined in KDHE's Corrective Action Decision. Future phases will address remaining soil and groundwater contamination using various methods tailored to conditions at each location.
The long-term remediation effort addresses legacy environmental conditions from the former military installation while supporting continued use and development of the property for the Salina community.
Updates will be shared as work progresses on future phases of the project.
