Mayor says new Amazon facility in Salina now employs more than 400 workers and drivers
Salina Mayor Mike Hoppock spoke at Monday’s Salina City Commission meeting about attending a ribbon-cutting earlier that morning for the new Amazon facility, which opened in the fourth quarter of last year and is now fully operational.
Hoppock said the project has already grown well beyond its original employment projection. While the facility was initially expected to bring about 100 jobs, he said it now has a little more than 200 full- and part-time employees working inside the building, along with another approximately 200 full- and part-time drivers handling deliveries.
He described the project as a strong addition to the community and another sign of continued growth in Salina.
The facility is a 90,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art building constructed on 20 acres. Hoppock also noted that the Salina Airport Authority has developed 80 acres at the site, leaving about 60 acres still available for future business development.
Hoppock said he was glad to be part of the ribbon-cutting and called the new Amazon facility another example of positive momentum in the city.
“This was fun to be a part of this morning, and again, just another example of some good things going on in Salina,” Hoppock said.
