Salina Public Schools Tornado Safety Procedures for Students and Parents
Salina Public Schools has published procedures to keep students safe during tornado warnings. Here's what parents and families need to know.
If a Tornado Warning Occurs During School Hours
Students and staff will immediately move to designated storm shelters within their school buildings. For safety reasons, exterior doors may be locked once everyone has relocated to shelter areas, and entry into the building cannot be guaranteed during the warning.
What Parents Should Do
When a tornado warning is issued, the district urges parents to seek shelter wherever they are and wait until the warning has been lifted before traveling to school. Salina311 will keep families informed through the School Messenger rapid notification system, which sends updates via text, email and phone. Parents can update their contact information on the district website.
School Bus Procedures
If a tornado warning occurs while buses are running, drivers will head to the nearest school where students will take shelter. Once emergency officials issue an "all clear," routes will resume and students will be transported home safely.
