Navy E-6B Mercury aircraft spotted doing touch-and-go training at Salina Regional Airport

An E-6B Mercury, a specialized U.S. Navy aircraft tied to national command-and-control operations, was seen conducting touch-and-go training at Salina Regional Airport over the weekend.

The E-6B Mercury is a modified Boeing 707-based aircraft operated by the U.S. Navy. It serves in the TACAMO mission, short for Take Charge and Move Out, which is designed to maintain communication with U.S. strategic forces, including ballistic missile submarines. The aircraft also serves as an airborne command post, giving it a critical role in national defense and military communications.

While the aircraft’s mission is highly specialized, touch-and-go training is a routine type of flight operation used to maintain pilot proficiency. In a touch-and-go, an aircraft lands on the runway and then takes off again without coming to a full stop.

The weekend activity added another notable military aviation sighting to Salina, which has long been familiar with both civilian and military aircraft traffic due to its airport infrastructure and aviation history.

The E-6B is recognizable by its four-engine configuration, long narrow fuselage, and mission-specific communications equipment. Though it resembles older commercial jetliners in overall shape, the aircraft serves a much different role, functioning as part of the nation’s airborne strategic communications network.
