Wendel comes to Salina South after serving as the head boys basketball coach at Ell-Saline, where district webpages list him as both a teacher and coach.

His recent run at Ell-Saline included a third-place finish at the 2025 Class 2A state tournament. Public reporting and statewide basketball coverage also show Ell-Saline scored 109 points in its third-place game, a total described as a state tournament single-game scoring record.
