George Austin Downing, 84, of Salina, passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at Riverstone Post Acute Nursing Home, in Salina. He was born in Steelville, Missouri, to William Paris and Edna Irene (Ennis) Downing on June 6, 1941.

Austin joined the Army in 1962 until 1977 doing two tours in Vietnam. After the Army he wore many hats. He drove a transportation truck, dug and laid pipe in Wyoming, helped stock Walmart in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and worked at several restaurants in Salina, he also worked at St. John’s Military School.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, Bill, Robert, Paul, Leslie, Juanita, and Lawrence.

Left to mourn his passing is significant other, Cristi Leavitt; his children, Judy, Jerry, Trinity, and Patty Ann; siblings, Mary Wilk and Kathy Minke; and several other relatives.

A memorial service and burial will be scheduled at a later date.
