Salina Fire Department Issues Grill Safety Reminders Ahead of Spring Season

The Salina Fire Department has released a set of safety guidelines for residents as grilling season begins this spring. The department emphasized that grills should only be used outdoors, placed well away from siding, deck rails, overhangs, and other combustible materials.

Among the key recommendations, the department advised residents to check propane grills for gas leaks before lighting, clean grease and fat buildup to prevent flare-ups, and never leave a hot grill unattended. The department also recommended keeping children and pets at least three feet from the grilling area and having a water source or fire extinguisher nearby.

The department issued additional guidance specific to grill type. For charcoal grills, residents are advised never to add starter fluid to an already lit fire and to allow coals to cool completely before disposing of ashes in a metal container. For propane grills, the department recommended opening the lid before lighting and waiting five minutes before relighting if the flame goes out.
