Salina Gymnastics Club Closed as Central Mall Awaits KDHE Clearance

Salina Gymnastics Club remains closed as Central Mall waits for clearance from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment following a complaint involving possible asbestos tile.

Owner Sheena Torres told Salina311 there is currently no estimated reopening date for the gymnastics club.

“As of right now, no,” Torres said when asked whether the club had an ETA for reopening. “We have to wait on KDHE to declare everything safe. That is in the process right now, but I have no idea how long that takes.”

In a public post, Salina Gymnastics Club said the closure followed a complaint made to KDHE alleging asbestos tile inside the mall. The post stated that the mall was built after the asbestos tile era and that the tile has been updated since the mall opened.

According to the post, the mall manager is working to resolve the issue, but the process remains tied to KDHE clearance. The post also stated that the mall owner is trying to bring in crews to clean up the building, but that no one is allowed inside the mall until KDHE clears it.

The gymnastics club is one of several businesses affected by the continued disruption at the mall. Salina311 has also reached out to AMC, ROSS, and other stores as part of an ongoing update on the condition of the mall and when tenants may be able to reopen.

Torres said the club does not currently have a satellite studio operating while it waits for approval to return.

“I’m stuck right now,” Torres said. “I am looking for a temporary location and possibly have one, but I am waiting on a phone call.”

Finding a temporary space presents its own challenge because of the specific needs of a gymnastics facility.

“Finding a building with the ceiling height I need is not an easy task,” Torres said.

At this time, Salina Gymnastics Club remains closed pending further clearance from KDHE. Salina311 will continue to follow updates from affected mall tenants and any additional information related to reopening timelines.
