Salina Woman Arrested After Pursuit, Faces Multiple Charges

A Salina woman was arrested Monday evening following a police pursuit that began after reports of a possibly intoxicated driver.

At approximately 7:30 p.m. on July 20, an officer responded to the 300 block of East Iron Avenue regarding a gray Toyota Highlander whose driver was believed to be intoxicated. The vehicle was located in the parking lot of Burger King, where customers reported concerns about the driver's condition.

Officers contacted the driver, identified as 36-year-old Bethanny Carter, and observed signs of possible impairment. Police said Carter refused commands to turn off the vehicle and exit. She then placed the vehicle in reverse and left the parking lot, traveling east on Iron Avenue.

A pursuit followed as Carter drove east on Iron, south on Oakdale Drive, and east on Gypsum Street before stopping in the 700 block of Gypsum. Police reported speeds reached approximately 60 mph during the pursuit.

After stopping, Carter allegedly refused repeated commands to exit the vehicle. Officers deployed pepper spray, but Carter continued to resist. Police said she grabbed at officers and attempted to kick them while they were taking her into custody. Officers ultimately secured Carter in a restraint device and transported her to Salina Regional Health Center for medical clearance.

Carter was later booked into the Saline County Jail on charges including flee and elude, driving under the influence, three counts of battery of a law enforcement officer, reckless driving, improper driving, speeding, and interference with law enforcement.

In addition, Carter faces charges stemming from a separate incident that occurred at approximately 1 a.m. on July 19.

According to police, an officer was flagged down by a pizza delivery driver who reported a disturbance while attempting to deliver an order to a residence in central Salina. The driver stated that Carter, who had ordered the pizza, attempted to take the pizza and delivery bag without paying. When the driver refused to hand over the order until payment was made, Carter allegedly tried to forcibly take the items.

The driver reported that Carter then shined a flashlight from her cellphone into his face and followed him to his vehicle, where she allegedly grabbed him multiple times. The driver pushed Carter away and fell to the ground during the encounter before contacting law enforcement.

As a result of that investigation, Carter was additionally charged with attempted robbery and battery. The cases remain under investigation.
