City of Salina Launches Temporary Relief Program for Residents Experiencing Water Quality Issues

The City of Salina has announced a new Residential Water Quality Temporary Relief Policy designed to assist utility customers experiencing water quality concerns such as discoloration, rust-colored water, sediment, and staining. The City has begun enrolling eligible customers in the program.

According to the City, the policy is intended to address customer concerns, identify problem areas within the water distribution system, and provide temporary assistance while long-term infrastructure improvements are evaluated.

City officials emphasized that Salina's drinking water continues to meet all applicable health standards established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and enforced by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. The City conducts required water quality testing and publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report for residents.

Officials noted that some customers continue to experience aesthetic water quality issues caused by iron, corrosion from aging water mains, and sediment buildup within portions of the distribution system. While these issues can affect the appearance of water, the City stated they are different from health-based drinking water violations.

Under the new policy, customers may report water quality concerns to begin the eligibility process. City staff will document reported issues, gather information, and determine whether residents qualify for available assistance programs.

The Salina City Commission recently approved assistance measures that include rebates of up to $750 for eligible in-home filtration systems. The new policy establishes the procedures for administering that assistance and helping customers participate in the program.

The City is also continuing efforts to improve the public water system. Officials report that approximately 45 miles of water lines have been replaced, with annual investments of about $2 million. Salina is also evaluating options to accelerate replacement of older iron water mains, particularly those installed during the 1950s and 1960s.

Residents experiencing ongoing discoloration, sediment, staining, or other aesthetic water quality concerns are encouraged to contact the City to begin the reporting and eligibility process. Customers may report concerns by calling 785-309-5735, emailing [email protected], or visiting City Hall at 300 W. Ash.

For additional information, residents may contact Martha Tasker, Director of Utilities.
