A 20-year-old Texas woman has been charged in Saline County in connection with an investigation into the deaths of two dogs that authorities believe died after being left inside a vehicle in Salina.

Kansas court records show an active criminal case.

Weaver, 20, of Fort Worth, Texas, was taken into custody earlier in the week.

Saline County booking records show Weaver was booked August 5 and list charges of cruelty to animals, knowingly killing or injuring an animal, and criminal littering on public property. A $1,500 bond was listed with the booking charges.

According to information released by the Salina Police Department, the investigation began after the Saline County Sheriff's Office received a report May 14 of two dead dogs found in the 800 block of North Fairchilds Road, northwest of Salina.

Police said investigators later received information that the dogs had allegedly been left inside a vehicle in the 1400 block of West Cloud Street in Salina around the beginning of May.

Authorities said they believed the dogs died from heat exposure while inside the vehicle and that their bodies were later taken to the Fairchilds Road area and dumped. Investigators identified Weaver as the person believed to have been caring for the dogs at the time, according to police.

Police said warrants were requested following a joint investigation involving the Salina Police Department and Saline County Sheriff's Office. Weaver was subsequently arrested by the Sheriff's Office.

The Kansas Courts hearing calendar confirms that a criminal case is now pending against Weaver and that she appeared in court Friday for her first appearance.
