Alamo Drafthouse Project Still on Track for Salina

Plans to bring Alamo Drafthouse Cinema to Salina remain on track as local developers continue working through details surrounding the project.

Salina311 first reported in May that local developers were in discussions with Alamo Drafthouse about bringing the movie theater concept to downtown Salina. At the time, the project remained in the discussion stage, with no final agreement publicly announced.

Those plans continue to move forward.

As of August, the Alamo Drafthouse project remains on track for Salina. There are still details being worked through and pieces of the project that remain in play, but the information available to Salina311 indicates efforts to bring the theater to the community are continuing.

The theater would bring a significantly different moviegoing experience to the community. Alamo Drafthouse combines movies with in-theater food and beverage service, allowing guests to order meals and drinks from their seats while watching a film.

The company is also well known for its strict policies against talking and using phones during movies, along with special screenings, movie parties, classic films and other programming beyond traditional new releases.

The development comes at an important time for moviegoers in Salina.

AMC Theatres permanently closed AMC Salina 10 at Central Mall earlier this year following extensive damage caused by severe storms in April. AMC later confirmed directly to Salina311 that a roof failure resulted in major water intrusion and damage throughout multiple areas of the theater. Following an evaluation and discussions with the property owner, AMC decided not to renew its lease.

The closure left Salina without the longtime multiplex that had served the community at Central Mall.

Attention quickly turned toward what could come next.

In May, Salina311 reported that local developers had been talking with Alamo Drafthouse about a possible Salina theater. The proposed project was described at the time as a multi-screen facility following the company's established model of combining movies, dining and beverage service.

While additional details still need to be finalized, the project remains active and on track.

Salina311 will continue following the development and will report additional information, including the location, project details and anticipated timeline, as those details become available.
