Saline County Republicans to Select Next County Clerk Thursday Night

Saline County Republicans to Select Next County Clerk Thursday Night

Saline County Republican precinct committee members will meet Thursday evening to select the person who will become the county's next clerk and election officer following the resignation of Jamie Doss.

The convention is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, at the Courtyard by Marriott, 3020 Riffel Drive in Salina.

Doss is resigning effective Sept. 13, leaving the position vacant less than two months before the Nov. 3 general election.

Under Kansas law and party rules, the replacement will be selected by Republican precinct committeemen and committeewomen elected during the Aug. 4 primary election.

The public and media are permitted to attend the convention, although only eligible Republican precinct committee members will vote.

Candidates to Speak Before Vote

The Saline County Republican Party previously announced that individuals interested in being considered for the position were required to contact County Chair Brenda Smith by Aug. 21.

Candidates will have an opportunity to speak before precinct committee members vote.

As of Tuesday, Salina311 has not identified a publicly announced list of candidates for the position.

The person selected through the convention process would fill the remainder of Doss' unexpired term.

Clerk Also Serves as Election Officer

The Saline County Clerk's Office has responsibilities extending beyond maintaining county records.

The county clerk serves as the county's election officer and is responsible for administration of elections, voter registration and other election-related duties. The office also works with taxing entities and maintains records used in the county's property-tax process.

That makes the timing of the vacancy notable, with the replacement being chosen approximately 10 weeks before the November general election.

Saline County Republican officials have said the convention process demonstrates the role precinct committee members play when a vacancy occurs in an elected partisan office.

The convention begins at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Courtyard by Marriott, 3020 Riffel Drive.
