Frank Eberhardt Acknowledged Among The Best Tennis Players.

The Kansas City Times states that Frank Eberhardt, of Salina, is considered by many the greatest tennis player west of New York, with the exception of Kreigh Collins, of Chicago. This being true it only remains for the Salina boy to defeat the Chicago player and the Times would be compelled to acknowledge Eberhardt’s ability. The Salina enthusiasts are just conceited enough to believe that the Eberhardts can beat Collins or any other crack player in the United States.

THE RILEYS WILL BE HERE.

One of the Best Attractions Ever Offered a County Fair.

The fair management is extremely fortunate in securing the Riley’s running combination for the fair which is to be held in this city the second week in September. This attraction has been secured at a big expense and will give exhibitions each afternoon consisting of chariot races, hurdle races, hippodrome races, riderless horse races, umbrella races, races with monkey riders and other races. The great Ben Hur chariot race is a half mile dash and is run with eight thoroughbred horses and four chariots, four horses driven abreast to each chariot, one driven by a man and the other by a woman. This race will be run on the track at the fair grounds and will be for blood. Nothing can be more exciting than the hurdle races over a half mile track. Three horses are entered in this race, two ridden by experienced jockeys and one by a lady rider, the hurdles, four in number being four feet high. The Roman standing hippodrome race is also a half-mile dash. Four horses are started in this race, two ridden by a lady hippodrome rider and two by a man. Both of the riders are experienced and some very fine horsemanship will be displayed by both riders. Aside from these races there will be other attractions presented by the Rileys. They have some of the best horses that are to be found in any attraction of this kind and the fair managers have been very fortunate in securing them for the Saline county fair. All the races will be run on the track at the fair grounds and free to all who are on the fair grounds. The races will be run each afternoon and while they will not be the only attractions during the fair they will hold a leading place. The officers of the fair association are sparing no pains to make this the best fair that has ever been held in Saline county and the present indications are that they will succeed. The fair commences on September 8 and closes on the 11th.

CITY NEWS IN BRIEFS.

Rev. R. A. Hoffman, of Salina, will preach in the Presbyterian church at Sylvan Grove next Sunday.

At a regular meeting of the Salina Military band Dave Maynard was elected vice president to succeed E. A. Knox, resigned.

The Odd Fellows conferred degrees on Dan Yordy and Samuel Peters last night. Refreshments were served to the members after the ceremonies.

One of the big cottonwood trees in Santa Fe was chopped down last evening, in front of the band stand on South Santa Fe. There were several hundred people nearby when the tree fell.

It is estimated that 4,000 loads of dirt will be taken from the site of the Bulkley-Bishop building on North Santa Fe avenue.
