City of Salina Provides Statement to Salina311 Denying Rumors of September Animal Services Closure, Staff Releases and Euthanasia
The City of Salina is denying a rumor circulating online that Salina Animal Services will close at the end of September, release most of its staff and euthanize animals remaining at the shelter.
Salina311 contacted city officials Friday seeking clarification on three specific claims being circulated: that Animal Services would close at the end of September, that all but two staff members would be released, and that animals remaining at the shelter at the end of September would be euthanized.
Deputy City Manager Shawn Henessee responded shortly afterward.
“No—that is yet another entirely false rumor,” Henessee said.
The denial comes as the city continues the process of potentially transitioning the operation of the animal shelter to a private organization.
The City of Salina issued a Request for Proposals on Aug. 7 seeking an organization to manage and operate the shelter. Proposals are due Sept. 10, and the city's solicitation lists an anticipated contract start date of on or before Jan. 1, 2027.
For now, the city has directly rejected the claims circulating about a September closure, widespread staff releases and euthanasia of the animals remaining at the facility.
