Cougars Bring Home Mayor's Cup for the First Time Since 2020: 35-33

Salina South took down defending Class 5A state champion Salina Central, 35-33, snapping a six-game losing streak to its crosstown rival and earning its first win in the series since Week 8 of the 2020 season.

The Cougars held the lead late, but Central made one final push, scoring with less than 90 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to two. The Mustangs went for the tie, but the South defense came up with the stop on the two-point conversion to seal a massive rivalry win.

Senior quarterback Izrael Telles delivered a monster performance, throwing 5 touchdown passes to power the Cougars’ offense.

The win also marks head coach Christien Ozores’ first Week 1 victory at Salina South as he begins his third season leading the program.
