River Festival Wristband Sales Drop 4%

The 2026 Smoky Hill River Festival recorded 14,810 total wristbands and an estimated 54,400 visits, according to City records and information provided by Salina Arts & Humanities.

Those figures measure different things.

Salina311 asked Salina Arts & Humanities how Festival attendance is calculated. Operations and Development Manager Anna Pauscher Morawitz said the estimate comes from digital tracking software provided through Visit Salina.

“We estimate attendance using digital tracking data software courtesy of Visit Salina,” Pauscher Morawitz said. “Each time someone visits for more than 10 minutes, it counts as a visit.”

That means attendance is an estimate based on digital-location data, not a physical head count or a tally of wristbands sold. A person who attends on multiple days can contribute more than one visit to the overall Festival total.

2026 Wristband Sales Declined

City records show 14,810 total wristbands in 2026, compared with 15,430 in 2025.

That is a decrease of 620 wristbands, or 4.0%.

The decline was considerably larger among advance sales. The Festival recorded 5,583 presale wristbands in 2026, down from 6,462 in 2025 — a decrease of 879 wristbands, or 13.6%.

The 2026 presale total was the lowest of the five-year period and was 19.6% below the 2023 high of 6,942.

City records show the full 2026 wristband total also included 2,668 employee wristbands, 1,708 $20 gate wristbands, 4,200 $10 daily gate wristbands and 651 Festival Families First wristbands.

The City describes its wristband and gate-count spreadsheet as its primary summary document for year-to-year sales comparisons.

Storm Came Near the End of Presales

The major Salina storm struck on June 8, just days before the Festival opened.

Advance wristband sales continued through June 9, meaning the storm came near the very end of the presale period.

Because most of the advance-sales window had already passed, the storm could have affected final-day sales, but the available records do not show how many presales, if any, were lost because of the weather.

The storm had a more direct opportunity to affect Festival gate activity because it occurred just before the event began.

Gate Sales Remained Relatively Steady

The Festival sold 5,908 wristbands at the gates in 2026.

That included:

$20 four-day wristbands: 1,708
$10 daily wristbands: 4,200

Combined gate sales over the past five years were:

Gate sales were down 141 wristbands, or 2.3%, from 2025.

Gate revenue reached $76,152, the highest of the five years reviewed.

Sunday Was Free in 2026

One factor behind the higher 2026 attendance estimate was the decision to make Sunday admission free.

The City's digital tracking data estimated 9,900 visits on Sunday in 2026, compared with 5,100 in 2025.

That is an increase of 4,800 visits, or about 94%.

Because Sunday did not require a paid wristband in 2026, that increase helped raise the Festival's overall attendance estimate without producing a corresponding increase in wristband sales.

Sunday alone accounted for about 18% of the Festival's estimated 54,400 visits in 2026.

Wristband Sales Compared With Attendance

The five-year comparison shows the difference between the two measurements:

In 2026, total wristbands were the lowest of the five-year period, while estimated visits were the second-highest.

The difference is partly explained by repeat visits, free admission for some attendees and the larger free-admission Sunday crowd.

How Daily Attendance Is Estimated

Salina Arts & Humanities said daily attendance is estimated through digital tracking data provided through Visit Salina. 

Pauscher Morawitz said each person who remains in the tracked Festival area for more than 10 minutes is counted as a visit.

That means the daily attendance figures are estimates based on limited available digital-location data rather than a count of every individual entering the grounds.

For 2026, the City's comparison spreadsheet lists:

How the $3 Million Economic Impact Was Estimated

The Festival's attendance estimate was also used to calculate an estimated economic impact of approximately $3 million.

Pauscher Morawitz told Salina311 that Arts & Humanities used the Americans for the Arts AEP6 calculator.

The department entered Saline County's population category, approximately $1.2 million in estimated Festival cash and in-kind budgets and portions of employee salaries attributed to the event, and an estimated attendance figure of 53,000.

“These numbers, including the $3 million economic impact, are all estimates based on this year,” Pauscher Morawitz said.

The AEP6 calculator uses locally entered figures, but the final result is a modeled estimate, not a direct accounting of how much Festival visitors actually spent in Salina.

Americans for the Arts cautions that AEP6 calculator results are estimates based on averages from similarly populated communities and “should not be used as a substitute” for an economic impact study customized specifically to the community.

Overview

Overall, the 2026 Festival showed a mixed picture: total wristbands were down 4.0%, presale wristbands were down 13.6%, and gate wristbands were down 2.3% from 2025. At the same time, overall estimated attendance increased from 50,300 in 2025 to 54,400 in 2026 — up 4,100 visits, or about 8.2%. A significant part of that increase came on Sunday, when admission was free: estimated Sunday visits rose from 5,100 in 2025 to 9,900 in 2026, an increase of 4,800, or 94.1%. In fact, the year-over-year increase in Sunday visits alone was larger than the Festival's 4,100-visit increase for the entire weekend, meaning changes on the other Festival days collectively offset some of Sunday's gain.
