‘It Took Exactly 11 Seconds’: Rempp Questions City Commission Selection Vote

Salina City Commissioner Doug Rempp raised concerns Monday about how quickly the commission selected Gary Norris to fill its vacant seat, pointing to the number of residents who had expressed interest in the position.

The comments came as commissioners considered a resolution formally appointing Norris to the vacancy created by the resignation of former Commissioner Jerry Ivey.

Rempp said 33 people had submitted expressions of interest for the position and said the level of interest should have warranted consideration.

“We know that we had 33 people who filled out expressions of interest. That should kind of tell us something right there,” Rempp said.

Rempp said he believed Norris would make a good commissioner, but questioned the speed at which the selection was made.

“Out of the 33 people, Gary Norris was one of the nominees, and I think Gary would make a fine commissioner,” Rempp said. “But I do have to mention, and I think everybody in the room knows, that when it came time to make that selection out of 33, it took exactly 11 seconds, and that was just surprising.”

Rempp did not make a motion to reconsider the previous selection.

The commission then proceeded with the resolution formally appointing Norris to the seat.
