RSV share of Saline County kids’ ER visits hit 4% in early September
RSV accounted for 4% of pediatric emergency-department visits in Saline County in the week ending Sept. 5, according to weekly Kansas ED surveillance tracked on Salina311.
That was up from 0% the prior week (ending Aug. 29). Other recent weeks showed 2.1% on Aug. 15 and 2.6% on Aug. 22 before the late-August zero.
Early last fall looked similar: 2.2% in the week of Sept. 13, 2025, and 3.8% the following week. This year’s 4.0% sits in that same early-season range. The highest share in the available window was 7.5% on Feb. 28, 2026, during last winter’s peak.
The figure is a share of emergency visits among patients under 13 years old — not a count of sick children and not a hospitalization rate. Weekly percentages can swing when the pediatric ED denominator is small.
Nationally, the CDC tracks weekly percent of ED visits associated with RSV (and flu and COVID) through syndromic surveillance. RSV activity is typically low in summer and rises in fall and winter — seasonality context, not a local count.
