Salina Installs Security Cameras at Splash Pads Amid Behavior Concerns

Salina's facilities maintenance team installed security cameras at all three of the city's splash pads, staff reported to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.

Staff said the department does not have significant closure problems at Jerry Ivey, but has experienced closures at the Hawthorne and Centennial splash pads, generally attributed to poor behavior. Examples cited included people using soap for showering or using the facilities for unintended purposes.

The cameras are intended to help obtain footage of incidents so the city can potentially prosecute.

Staff also reported that the Jerry Ivey splash pad project is complete, and that the city is considering adding a roughly four-foot concrete apron around the entire pad, most likely next year, to address water runoff from heavy use.
