Downtown Salina Set for Busy Saturday With Street Fair, Parade, Market and Comedy Show
Downtown Salina is set for a busy Saturday, with events scheduled from early morning through the evening Sept. 26.
The largest is the annual Smoky Hill Museum Street Fair, which will bring a parade, food vendors, live entertainment, historical demonstrations and a chili cook-off to the downtown area. Other events include the weekly Farm & Art Market, a free Repair Café and a Saturday night performance by comedian Rodney Carrington at the Stiefel Theatre.
Farm & Art Market — 7:30 to 11 a.m.
Saturday starts with the Farm & Art Market Downtown at 149 N. Santa Fe Ave.
The market operates from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Saturdays and features area growers, bakers, food producers, artists and other local vendors. The downtown market continues through October.
Street Fair Parade — 10 a.m.
The Smoky Hill Museum Street Fair begins with a parade down Santa Fe Avenue at 10 a.m.
This year's parade theme is “America's 250th Old West Style,” recognizing the nation's 250th anniversary.
The parade will travel Santa Fe Avenue between Elm and South streets and is scheduled to run until approximately 10:45 a.m.
Smoky Hill Museum Street Fair — 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Following the parade, activities will center around Smoky Hill Museum, 211 W. Iron Ave.
The free Street Fair runs until 4 p.m. and includes food vendors, Old West activities, historical re-enactors, children's crafts, caricaturists and live entertainment.
The Boiling Pot Chili Cook-off will also return. Public chili tasting and voting is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with tasting tickets priced at $2.50. The winner is scheduled to be announced at 2 p.m.
Live entertainment includes Kansas country artist Jake Gill, who is scheduled to perform during the event and return for an encore set at 3 p.m.
The museum will also have its “America's 250th: Connecting a Nation” exhibit open Saturday.
Free Repair Café — 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
A few blocks away, the Salina Art Center Warehouse at 149 S. Fourth St. will host its Fall Repair Café from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Residents can bring broken or worn items and work with volunteer “fixers” on repairs ranging from sewing and woodworking to bicycles and small household items.
The event is free and is designed both to repair items and teach people how to make repairs themselves.
Rodney Carrington — 7:30 p.m.
The activity continues Saturday night when comedian and musician Rodney Carrington takes the stage at the Stiefel Theatre, 151 S. Santa Fe Ave.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the show beginning at 7:30 p.m. The performance is restricted to ages 21 and older.
Tickets listed by the Stiefel range from $49 to $69 before applicable fees.
A Full Day Downtown
That creates a nearly full day of activity along and around Santa Fe Avenue Saturday.
The Farm & Art Market begins at 7:30 a.m., the Street Fair parade starts at 10 a.m., museum activities continue through 4 p.m., and the Stiefel's evening show begins at 7:30 p.m.
Drivers heading downtown Saturday should also be prepared for the Street Fair parade route along Santa Fe Avenue between Elm and South streets during the morning.
