Storms, Brief Tornadoes Possible in Salina Area This Afternoon and Evening
The National Weather Service in Wichita says brief tornadoes are possible in central Kansas this afternoon into early evening, especially west of the Flint Hills. Salina and Saline County are also under a Flood Watch through 7 p.m. Thursday.
Salina was at 72 degrees with light rain and fog late Wednesday morning. The forecast calls for a 95% chance of showers and thunderstorms today, with storms likely again tonight.
Where to Take Shelter
Federal guidelines rank tornado shelter options from worst to best:
- Worst options: mobile homes, vehicles, and underneath a highway overpass.
- Bad options: large open rooms such as gymnasiums, and manufactured housing.
- Good options: a basement, or an interior room of a well-constructed home or building.
- Best options: an above- or below-ground tornado storm shelter that meets NSSA/ICC 500 standards, or a FEMA safe room.
If a Tornado Warning is issued, seek the best available shelter immediately. If you are in one of the worst or bad options, find another location and stay in place until the all clear.
Stay Alert
- Keep a way to receive weather alerts, such as a weather radio or phone alerts, especially if storms continue after dark.
- Know where you will shelter before storms arrive.
- Check on neighbors who may need help.
The Flood Watch for Saline County remains in effect until 7 p.m. Thursday, as pockets of very heavy rain could cause localized flooding.
