Salina Fire Department: Sunflower Adult Day Services Fire Under Investigation
An overnight fire caused significant damage to Sunflower Adult Day Services in downtown Salina, temporarily preventing the organization from providing its daily services.
The Salina Fire Department was dispatched shortly after midnight to a structure fire at 401 W. Iron Avenue.
When firefighters arrived, they found an active fire inside the two story commercial building, with significant flames visible from windows on both the first and second floors. Crews entered the building to suppress the fire and search for occupants because the second floor also contains residential living space.
According to the Fire Department, the building's only occupant had safely exited before firefighters arrived. A search confirmed no one else was inside.
Firefighters brought the fire under control within approximately 15 to 20 minutes before remaining at the scene to conduct overhaul operations and extinguish remaining hot spots.
Both floors sustained fire damage, while significant smoke damage was reported throughout the remainder of the building.
The damage has temporarily prevented Sunflower Adult Day Services from providing its daily elderly respite services. The organization serves community members and families who rely on those services.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
