Janice Lee (Prater) Ditto

September 26, 1942 - October 8, 2026

Janice Lee (Prater) Ditto

Janice Lee (Prater) Ditto, 84, of Abilene, Kansas went to be with the Lord on October 8, 2026. She was born on September 26, 1942, in Wichita, Kansas to Cecil Glenn and Wilda Mae (Driscoll) Prater. On August 5, 1962, she married David Ditto. Together they had three children, Chandra, David Jr., and Troy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 62 years, brother Robert Prater, and infant son David Ditto Jr.

She is survived by her sister Doris (Bill) Boyd, daughter Chandra (Hank) Steckman and son Troy (Darci) Ditto; 4 grandchildren, Drew Miley, Courtney (Brett) Cross, Brody Ditto, Reece (Payton) Powell; and 7 great grandchildren, David Miley, Dannie Mae Miley, Gracie Case, Derek Miley, Eli Case, Mack Cross, and Evie Cross.

Janice spent most of her life as a homemaker taking care of her children and whatever venture her and Dave were into at the time.

Throughout her marriage Janice and her husband raised and cared for every animal from dogs, pigeons, sheep, pigs, and chickens. You name it and they probably had it. But Janice and Dave's biggest desire was their horses. They both had a love for horses from an early age. Together they operated D & J Quarter Horse Ranch for over thirty years. They raised, trained, and showed horses all over the United States.

Later in life Janice with her husband Dave moved to Abilene, Kansas where together they owned and operated Ditto Kennels. They raised and trained racing greyhounds for themselves as well as many customers from all over the world.

Janice didn't have a lot of hobbies outside of the farm. She quilted and made several beautiful quilts. She was known for her talent of making the best bread and pies. But she will be most remembered for her love of taking great pride in her yard. She loved flowers and roses particularly. She would spend hours tending to her yard and mowing. She loved to mow. Dave always said as long as he kept her mower blades sharp, she was happy.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, October 14, at Ryan Mortuary, Salina.

Graveside service 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 15, at Roselawn Cemetery, Salina.

Memorials may be made to: Alzheimer’s Association Central and Western Kansas Chapter, in care of Ryan Mortuary.
