Salina Could Break 51-Year-Old Heat Record Today Before Storms Bring Sharp Cooldown

Salina could break a 51-year-old temperature record today as an unusually warm October afternoon gives way to thunderstorms and some of the coolest temperatures of the fall later this week.

Today's forecast calls for a high between 92 and 93 degrees, potentially exceeding the October 12 record of 91 degrees set in 1975. The unusually warm weather will also bring gusty south winds, with temperatures more typical of summer than the middle of October.

However, the warm conditions are not expected to last.

Thunderstorm chances increase Tuesday afternoon and evening as a weather system moves into central Kansas. Rain and thunderstorms are expected to continue into Wednesday and Thursday, with some storms potentially producing damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfall.

The approaching system will also bring a significant temperature change. After today's near-record heat, afternoon temperatures could fall into the 60s by Wednesday and Thursday, with highs potentially remaining in the upper 50s Friday.

Overnight temperatures could fall to around 40 degrees Friday night, marking one of the coolest periods Salina has experienced so far this fall.

The timing is consistent with the arrival of the region's first fall freezes, which typically occur during the latter half of October. Salina's usual first-freeze window falls between October 12 and October 28, although current forecasts do not indicate a definite freeze.

The temperature swing could exceed 30 degrees in just a few days, a reminder of how quickly Kansas weather can change during the fall.

Residents should monitor updated forecasts as the storm system approaches, particularly Tuesday night through Thursday, when thunderstorms and heavier rainfall are most likely.
