Salina Human Relations Commission Reviews October Civil Rights Docket
The Salina Human Relations Commission reviewed its October 2026 case docket during its Oct. 13 meeting, covering complaints and inquiries across housing, employment, and public accommodations categories.
Staff reported no current employment cases. One person inquired about a possible employment matter but chose to work with an attorney and is not proceeding through the commission's office, staff said.
On housing, staff said there were no significant updates. One inquiry was not referred because it fell outside the commission's jurisdiction, one case remains pending with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and another scheduled matter ended when the party did not appear. Staff noted the office also fields numerous landlord-tenant and code-compliance calls that do not involve discrimination, and in those cases refers people to resources such as Kansas Legal Services and small claims court.
In the public accommodations category, staff said two cases had been closed. Both involved parking lot accessibility issues, such as improper striping or deteriorated ramps and sidewalks, which the affected businesses corrected. Staff said the office works with entities to fix such issues before filing formal complaints.
Staff explained that the commission, as a HUD agency, follows a reporting year that runs from July 1 to June 30 rather than the calendar year. Staff said they did not anticipate bringing any new cases to the commission within the next 30 days.
