Freeze Warning Issued for Saline County Overnight Into Saturday Morning
The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Freeze Warning for Saline County from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, with temperatures at or below 32 degrees expected.
The warning, issued Friday morning, upgrades the Freeze Watch that had been in effect since Thursday.
What to Expect Overnight
Salina's forecast low is 31 degrees. Frost is expected to form after 2 a.m., with widespread frost likely before 9 a.m. Saturday.
According to the Weather Service, frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and other sensitive plants and could damage unprotected outdoor plumbing. Forecasters are urging residents to take steps now to protect tender plants.
Windy Friday, Sunny Saturday
Friday stays windy, with a high near 55 and north-northwest winds of 20 to 25 mph gusting as high as 36 mph. Saturday turns sunny after the frosty start, with a high near 60.
A Few Days Early
Based on National Weather Service normals for 1991–2020, Salina's average first freeze comes around Oct. 21, so this weekend's freeze would arrive a few days ahead of schedule.
How to Prepare
- Bring potted plants indoors or cover them with sheets or blankets Friday evening.
