Wichita Soccer Complex Incident Highlights Lack of Vehicle Barriers Between Salina’s Magnolia Fields, Parking Lot and 45 MPH Road
A mass casualty incident involving a vehicle at a Wichita sports complex Saturday brings a safety question closer to home: What separates vehicles from children and spectators at Salina’s Magnolia Soccer Complex?
The complex at 2100 E. Magnolia Road serves as Salina’s primary soccer facility, hosting leagues, camps, clinics and tournaments. Its grounds also include a playground, shelter and walking trails, bringing families together beyond the sidelines.
Magnolia Road runs alongside the soccer complex with a posted speed limit of 45 mph. The playing grounds sit below the roadway, with the roadside ditch sloping downward toward the complex. Children have been observed practicing soccer an estimated 50 feet from the roadway.
There are no vehicle barriers separating the playing areas from Magnolia Road or the complex’s parking lot.
That layout places children and spectators near vehicle traffic without a physical barrier to prevent a vehicle from entering the occupied areas.
Saturday’s incident at Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita involved a vehicle and multiple reported injuries. Wichita police described it as a mass casualty incident.
For Magnolia, the local concern extends beyond vehicles entering from a parking lot. It includes the proximity of a 45 mph road to recreation areas at a lower elevation, where children practice and families gather.
Salina311 has sent questions to City Manager Jacob Wood about the complex’s vehicle access and safety protections, whether the city has evaluated the risk of vehicles entering the fields and whether barriers or other improvements are being considered. Wood was also asked to forward the questions to whoever is currently overseeing Parks and Recreation.
The Wichita incident brings renewed relevance to a specific question for Salina: What measures would prevent a vehicle leaving Magnolia Road or the parking lot from reaching children and spectators at the soccer complex?
