Salina Fire Station Art Integration Complete as Mosaic Tile Project Continues

Salina's Community Art and Design Committee provided updates on two public art projects during its October 20 meeting.

A staff member reported that the artwork and sign for a city fire station, described as created by an artist named Eric, has been installed and is complete. The piece includes back lighting that runs behind a central number four, with three set lights above it. The center light had reportedly been turned off because it was drowning out the back lighting. The staff member encouraged the public to view the piece after dark and sought volunteers with night photography experience to document it for the public art archive.

The committee also reviewed photographs of mosaic tiles carved by children for a separate integration project. The 16 larger tiles, made as two-by-two squares, were cut into smaller pieces to dry evenly, with smaller four-by-four inch tiles set to frame them. Artists identified as Ann and Chip may leave some tiles blank or use pattern work to create visual resting space. Installation of the full tile layout is expected around springtime.
