Salina to Relocate Sculpture at Jerry Ivey Park After Repairs
Pokey Park's bronze sculpture "Poco a Poco Se Va Lejos," previously displayed at Jerry Ivey Park, will be reinstalled in a new location along a walking trail after repairs, according to discussion at the October 20 Community Art and Design Committee meeting.
A staff member said the sculpture's metal base had been bent, causing it to rock, and was sent to Calvin Customs for repair. In coordination with the parks department, staff chose a new site along the walking trail rather than its former spot near a pond that has since been removed, along with another water feature.
The sculpture, estimated at three to four feet tall, is expected to be placed about six feet off the trail. The staff member said staff are exploring options to elevate the piece on limestone to discourage people from sitting or climbing on it, and hopes to complete any concrete work within the next month before weather shifts.
Staff also said they are still working toward issuing a call for a project at the Oakdale Memorial Gateway, with a timeline expected to extend into 2027. The staff member noted that a rushed timeline would increase costs and that staff want to avoid having equipment at the Oakdale gate during festival time.
