Salina Cultural Plan Draft Outlines Five Goals Ahead of City Commission Session
The Salina Arts and Humanities Commission reviewed a preliminary draft of the city's cultural plan during its October 21 meeting, in advance of a presentation scheduled for the Salina City Commission in a study session at 2:30 p.m. Monday, October 26.
The draft, prepared by Keen Independent Research, identifies community strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, and lays out five draft goals. According to the presentation, the goals are: sustain and strengthen Salina's cultural foundation; make arts and culture more accessible, visible and relevant to Salina; make Salina a place where artists and creatives can build a life and career; connect Salina's cultural ecosystem and build shared capacity; and leverage arts and culture as a driver of Salina's identity, downtown vitality and regional appeal.
Salina Arts and Humanities Executive Director Brad Anderson told commissioners the plan is based on more than 700 surveys, roughly 60 participants in interactive sessions at the temple, focus groups with community leaders, and input from residents not actively engaged in the arts. He described the plan as communitywide rather than limited to Salina Arts and Humanities programs.
The draft identified weaknesses including limited affordable creative space, uneven programming across disciplines, limited opportunities for local artists, and weak outside funding from large granting agencies. Opportunities cited included expanding regional draw, continuing downtown and citywide economic development momentum, and more intentional coordination and advocacy among cultural organizations.
Staff noted that roughly 90% of the community's cultural offerings or venues are within a quarter mile of Santa Fe and Iron, and referenced ongoing downtown development, including new apartments described as more than 50 units opening soon.
Anderson said the plan will return to the commission's January meeting before going to the City Commission for final approval and adoption. He asked commissioners to provide feedback on what might be missing and said the firm will present to the City Commission on Monday. He invited commissioners to attend in support.
