Gypsum Man Reports $10,000 Loss in Equipment Purchase Scam
A 47-year-old Gypsum man reported being the victim of a scam after responding to an online advertisement for a skid loader, according to information discussed during a recent meeting.
Officials said the man responded to a Facebook advertisement offering a skid loader for sale for $21,000. After making contact by phone with individuals associated with the advertisement, the victim negotiated a deal and wired $10,000 to a Wells Fargo account as a partial payment. The skid loader was reportedly supposed to be shipped from Louisiana.
After the payment was sent, the equipment was never delivered. Authorities said the victim was later unable to contact the sellers, as both the website and phone number became inactive or invalid. Further investigation revealed the sellers were using a business name similar to that of a legitimate company, but with different contact information, and the legitimate company does not sell used equipment.
The victim reported he was attempting to purchase a 2011 Kubota SVL 9020 skid loader. Officials noted the scammers provided what appeared to be a legitimate contract and purchase agreement, which contributed to the victim’s belief that the transaction was valid.
Authorities stated the advertisement was located on Facebook, though it was unclear whether it originated from Facebook Marketplace or another type of paid advertisement. The case remains under investigation.
Officials emphasized the risks associated with purchasing equipment online and encouraged buyers to conduct in-person transactions whenever possible to reduce the risk of fraud.
