Storm Prep, Not Shelf Clearing: What Salina Shoppers Are Saying
The National Weather Service is forecasting that Saline County could see snowfall totals approaching eight inches this weekend, along with wind chills dipping below zero.
Ahead of the expected winter weather, Salina311 stopped by a local grocery store to talk with residents picking up essentials and preparing for colder conditions.
“I’m just grabbing the basics,” said one shopper loading milk and bread into their cart. “Enough for a few days so I don’t have to go back out if the roads get bad.”
Another shopper said preparation doesn’t have to mean clearing the shelves. “We’re not stocking up like it’s the end of the world,” they said. “Just lunch meat, milk, and things we know we’ll use anyway.”
Some shoppers said experience has taught them to stay calm. “I’ve lived in Kansas my whole life,” one resident said. “Snow happens. It’s smart to be ready, but there’s no reason to overdo it.”
Others echoed that sentiment, noting that overbuying can leave shelves empty for those who need immediate supplies. “If everyone just buys what they need, we’ll all be fine,” one shopper said.
Emergency officials continue to encourage residents to prepare for winter weather by checking vehicles, limiting unnecessary travel during the storm, and keeping basic supplies on hand, while avoiding unnecessary overstocking.
