Salina Public Library Youth Services Remodel Nears Finish Line

The lower level of the Salina Public Library is moving closer to reopening as a redesigned Youth Services space built around children, teens and families.

The project, called Re-Imagining Our Library, is intended to turn the library’s lower floor into a more useful and welcoming destination for reading, learning, play, programs and family support.

The remodel includes updated youth areas, a new programming space, a teen area, improved seating, updated technology, a family restroom, a private nursing room and a layout designed to better serve families using the library.

The project has been years in the making. According to the Salina Public Library, the Youth Services area was last renovated in 1997. Since then, the space has seen years of use while technology, programming and the needs of local families have changed.

The library has described the remodel as an investment in children, teens, parents and caregivers across Salina and Saline County. Youth Services is one of the most active parts of the library, supporting early literacy, school-age reading, teen programming, family visits and outreach to children throughout the community.

During construction, youth and teen materials were temporarily moved to the main floor, and some programs shifted to alternate spaces. Once the remodel is complete, the updated lower level is expected to provide a more modern and flexible area for reading, programs, studying, gathering and family support.

The project also reflects a broader investment in public spaces that families use regularly. For many local families, the library is more than a place to check out books. It is a place for children to build reading habits, teens to find a safe space, parents to connect with resources and the community to support learning outside the classroom.

In an era when plenty of public spending disappears into studies, consultants and other paperwork confetti, this project offers something residents can actually walk into and use.

The renovated Youth Services space is expected to reopen after final work is completed.
