Kayla Errebo Enters No Contest Plea in Fatal Saline County Crash Case
Kayla Lynn Errebo, 33, of Lorraine, entered a no contest plea Monday in Saline County District Court in connection with a fatal August 2025 crash that killed Deanna “June” Sommerfeld and injured her husband, Mark Sommerfeld.
Following the plea, Errebo was found guilty of second-degree murder and aggravated battery. A no contest plea does not admit guilt, but it allows the court to enter a conviction.
The case stems from a head-on crash on Aug. 8, 2025, near South Reese Road and K-140 Highway in rural Saline County. Deanna Sommerfeld, 55, of Brookville, was killed in the crash. Mark Sommerfeld, 61, was seriously injured.
As part of the plea agreement, several other charges were dismissed, including improper driving on a laned roadway, violation of duty as a driver, circumvention of an ignition interlock device and reckless driving.
Errebo had previously been accused of leaving the crash scene. She was later located in Ellsworth. Her grandfather, Dennis Katzenmeier, had also faced an obstruction-related charge connected to the case, but that charge was dismissed in April.
During earlier court proceedings, testimony included details about the timeline before and after the crash, including allegations involving Errebo’s whereabouts before the collision, her departure from the scene and later contact with law enforcement.
Sentencing is scheduled for July 10 at 9 a.m. Errebo faces sentencing on the second-degree murder and aggravated battery convictions.
The case has remained one of the more serious criminal proceedings tied to a Saline County traffic fatality in recent months, involving both the death of one victim and serious injuries to another.
