Southeast of Saline Dominates Lakin 7-0 to Reach 3A State Semifinals
Southeast of Saline advanced to the 3A state semi-finals with a dominant 7-0 shutout victory over Lakin on Monday at Salina South High School.
Senior pitcher Karlee Zurfluh was the story of the game, throwing a complete-game three-hitter while keeping the Broncs off the scoreboard entirely. The Trojans' ace controlled the game from start to finish in the state quarterfinal matchup.
Southeast's offense came alive from an unexpected source—the bottom of the order. Hannah Thiel, Paedyn Merrill, and Madelyn McFadden combined for four of the team's six hits, scored three runs, and drove in two.
The Trojans jumped ahead early, scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Kyiah Samuelson singled to the left side of the infield. Southeast added two more runs in the second inning on a groundout by McFadden and a lineout by Reese Heinrich.
Heinrich led the Trojans with two RBIs, while Thiel and Samuelson each collected two hits. Southeast showed discipline at the plate, drawing seven walks—led by Ashley Whelchel and Samuelson with two each. The Trojans were also aggressive on the basepaths, stealing six bases. Samuelson led the way with three stolen bases.
Lakin's offense managed just three hits—singles by Aydrah Rosales, Sara Martinez, and Avyree Greer. Broncs pitcher Kiah Beymer took the loss, going six innings and allowing seven runs (six earned) on six hits and seven walks.
The Trojans now advance to the 3A semi-finals as they continue their postseason run.
