Kansas Wheat Harvest Reaches 91%; Corn and Soybean Conditions Mostly Good
Kansas farmers had 5.1 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending July 5, according to the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service.
The newest crop progress report, released July 6 from Manhattan, shows winter wheat harvest nearly complete and ahead of both last year and the five-year average.
Wheat harvest moves ahead of average
Winter wheat harvested reached 91%, ahead of 78% at the same time last year and the 74% five-year average.
Soil moisture remains mostly adequate
Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 4% very short, 16% short, 65% adequate, and 15% surplus.
Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 6% very short, 18% short, 66% adequate, and 10% surplus.
Corn and soybeans developing ahead of average
Corn condition was rated 49% good and 15% excellent, with 25% fair, 6% poor, and 5% very poor. Corn silking reached 41%, near 37% last year and ahead of the 30% average. Corn in the dough stage was at 5%, compared with 2% last year and 1% on average.
Soybean condition was rated 57% good and 10% excellent, with 25% fair, 7% poor, and 1% very poor. Soybeans planted reached 97%, near 93% last year and equal to average. Soybeans emerged reached 90%. Blooming was at 26%, equal to last year and ahead of the 20% average. Setting pods was at 1%.
Sorghum, cotton, sunflowers and pasture
Sorghum condition was rated 43% good and 15% excellent. Sorghum planted reached 94%, near last year and equal to average. Sorghum headed was at 12%, ahead of 4% both last year and the average.
Cotton condition was rated 37% good and 4% excellent, with 47% fair. Cotton squaring reached 57%, well ahead of 27% last year and ahead of the 47% average. Cotton setting bolls reached 5%.
Sunflowers planted reached 83%, behind 93% last year and the 90% average.
Pasture and range conditions were rated 46% good and 10% excellent, with 29% fair, 10% poor, and 5% very poor.
