Parent Guide: What Families Can Expect Inside Salina Public Library’s Reimagined Youth Services Area

Salina Public Library’s newly remodeled Youth Services Department is reopening this month, giving families a first look at updated spaces designed for children, teens and caregivers.

The library will celebrate the grand opening of the reimagined Youth Services Department on Friday, July 17, from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. at the library, located at 301 W. Elm Street.

The event is free and open to the public. Families will be able to tour the remodeled space, enjoy light refreshments, learn more about the project and see what has changed inside the lower-level youth area.

What is new for families

The remodel was designed to make the Youth Services Department more useful for different ages and family needs.

New and updated areas include:

A dedicated Youth Programming RoomA new Teen Room for ages 12 to 18An expanded play areaA new Community Meeting RoomA private Mother’s RoomNew restrooms, including a family restroomAdditional seatingUpdated technologyAn improved service deskRenovations to the Prescott Room

For parents, the biggest practical change is that the youth area is no longer just a place to check out books. The remodeled department is designed around reading, play, programs, studying, teen use and caregiver needs.

Spaces by age group

The project separates the youth area into spaces meant for different stages of childhood.

The library’s plan includes a “Littles Space” for preschool children and caregivers, with hands-on play and seating for reading together.

The school-age area is designed for early readers through middle-grade students, with books and comfortable reading spots.

The new teen space gives ages 12 to 18 a defined area to hang out, create and study while still remaining visible within the department.

That matters because toddlers, elementary students and teens do not use a library the same way. Shocking discovery, yes, but one worth designing around.

Why the remodel happened

The Youth Services remodel is part of the library’s “Re-Imagining Our Library” initiative. The goal was to update the lower-level youth department into a destination for children, teens and families to read, play, create, learn and grow.

Construction began in early January, and the lower level was closed during the work. Youth and teen materials were temporarily relocated to the main floor while the project was underway.

The remodel also added practical family-focused amenities, including the private Mother’s Room, family restroom, better service desk placement and more seating.

What parents should know before going

The grand opening is scheduled for Friday, July 17, from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m.

Parents should expect the event to be more than a normal library visit. It will include tours, refreshments and an opportunity to see the full remodel.

Families with younger children may want to plan extra time to explore the expanded play area and new youth spaces. Families with older students may want to check out the teen room, especially with the school year approaching.

The library’s regular hours are:

Sunday: noon to 5 p.m.Monday through Thursday: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.Friday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.Saturday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Photo policy during the event

The library notes that it may take photos or video at library events for publicity. Anyone who does not want to be photographed or filmed can notify library staff.

That is especially worth knowing for parents who prefer not to have their children included in public event photos.

Why it matters

For Salina families, the remodeled Youth Services Department adds more than new furniture and fresh paint. It creates a dedicated space for early childhood learning, school-age reading, teen study, family programs and community use.

Libraries have long served as one of the few public places where families can spend time without being expected to buy something every 11 minutes, which is practically a miracle in modern America.

The reopening gives parents a chance to see how the updated department can fit into regular family routines, whether that means storytime, after-school reading, teen study time, summer programs or simply finding a quiet place for kids to explore books and learning.
