Salina Reports Full Summer Camp, Wraps Up Pestinger Stadium Under Budget
Salina Parks and Recreation staff provided updates on recreation programs and construction projects during the Aug. 19 Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meeting.
Staff reported that the summer camp program ran at its maximum capacity of roughly 90 to 91 campers per week all summer, filling on the first day. A new toddler time program offered during the summer averaged about 25 to 30 children, and a year-round adult volleyball program drew 21 teams. Staff highlighted programming led by supervisor Sarah, including therapeutic recreation for people with disabilities and day trips for seniors ages 55 and older. Field house events included a youth basketball event with 33 teams and a fast pitch masters softball camp. Outdoor league play included 87 league teams at Bill Burke and Berkley Family and 22 teams in a new 3-on-3 soccer program at the soccer complex.
Staff also reported that the Pestinger Family Stadium project was administratively wrapped up with all final expenses in. Staff said the city and its partner, Salina Baseball Enterprises, came in under budget, with the city about 5% under and Salina Baseball about 2% under. Plaques recognizing contributors are planned for installation this fall, along with a flagpole as part of a concrete plan.
Additional project updates included delivery and installation in July of a final pavilion shade structure at the Barkley dog park, with a final bench to be added, and continuing concrete work for phase 4B. In response to a board member's question, staff said there are no plans in the 10-year capital improvement program to install turf at Berkley Family fields one through four, and that the city is committed to keeping a grass field at Matson Field, though staff would consider a partnership if a donor came forward.
