Heritage Commission Selects Stiefel Window Color After Debate Between Honeysuckle, White and Black

A central point of discussion at the Salina Heritage Commission's meeting was the exterior cladding color for the six replacement windows at the Fox Watson Stiefel Theater.

Staff presented several color samples, including options described as poplar white and honeysuckle. Staff said the poplar white was the closest visual relationship to the adjacent window frame and sashes, while the honeysuckle more closely related to the brick and cement sill below. SHPO's July 8, 2026 technical comments indicated a preference for a window color that more closely relates to the historic brick on the second floor.

Kent Buse, technical director with the Stiefel Theater, said his preference was the honeysuckle color, noting it is a more muted color that would hide dirt and wear.

John Quinley, a past chair on the Stiefel board, stated his personal preference was black, saying it would match storefronts on the block and lend a more up-to-date look. Staff noted that the storefront below had been approved with black window frames in a separate, earlier decision, but said that decision did not control the current request.

The commission adopted a motion including the honeysuckle exterior window color. Commissioners noted honeysuckle would be more muted and easier to keep clean. Following the vote, staff sought clarification regarding whether both honeysuckle and poplar white were being permitted. The commission also discussed that the manufacturer offers only certain standard colors, with custom colors potentially available at added cost for the limited run of six windows.
