Salina Fire Department Honors 25th Anniversary of 9/11 at New Station 4

Salina marked the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks Friday morning with a memorial ceremony at the new Salina Fire Station 4.

Members of the Salina Fire Department, city officials and community members gathered at the station to remember the nearly 3,000 people killed in the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, including the firefighters, law enforcement officers and other first responders who died while responding.

The ceremony included remarks from speakers reflecting on the significance of September 11 and the sacrifices made by first responders that day.

As part of the observance, the American flag was raised outside the new fire station.

The ceremony carried additional significance for the Salina Fire Department as it was held at the city's newly completed Fire Station 4, a facility built to serve a new generation of Salina firefighters and the community.

Friday marks 25 years since hijacked airplanes struck the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Virginia. A fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers and crew members attempted to regain control of the aircraft.

Among those killed on September 11 were 343 members of the New York City Fire Department.

The Salina ceremony served as a local remembrance of those who died, those who responded and the lasting impact September 11 has had on firefighters and other first responders across the country.
