Salina Public Library exhibit by Aisha Imani Sanaa, drawing on Gordon Parks' 1956 Alabama photos, closes Nov. 6
An exhibit by artist Aisha Imani Sanaa, "The Pursuit of New Beginnings," is on display in Gallery 708 at the Salina Public Library through Friday, Nov. 6, according to the library.
The library says the body of work celebrates the many ways African Americans have continuously fought for a better life with courage, creativity, faith, intuition, strength, tenacity and unity. The series honors photographer Gordon Parks' "Alabama, 1956" series by using moments Parks captured as image references, according to the exhibit description.
Sanaa is described by the library as an interdisciplinary, community-driven artist whose work focuses on resiliency and the pursuit of joy, liberation and wellness. She earned a bachelor of fine arts in interior design from the California College of the Arts, according to the library.
She has worked on community projects with organizations including ArtsConnect of Topeka, the Mulvane Art Museum at Washburn University, the Kansas Children's Discovery Center and the For The Culture Festival, the library said. The series has also been shown at the Lawrence Public Library and the Johnson County Arts and Heritage Center and Museum.
The exhibit opened Sept. 25. A reception planned for Oct. 2 was canceled due to unforeseen circumstances, according to the library.
The library, at 301 W. Elm St., is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Questions about the exhibit can go to Ben Johnson at 785-833-9216 or [email protected].
