Kenwood Cove Sees Cool June, Downward Membership Trend in 2026 Season
The Salina Parks and Recreation Advisory Board received a season review for Kenwood Cove during its Aug. 19 meeting, with staff reporting that the aquatic center's chemical season ran from May 26 through Aug. 9, ending with a pooch plunge event on Aug. 10.
Parks & Rec Director Jeff Hammond told the board that weather significantly affected attendance this year, describing a "cool-ish" June that carried into early July along with substantial rainfall. According to figures he cited from Weather Underground, June saw maximum precipitation of about 5.8 inches and July about 2.6 inches. He said the rain forced several cancellations and reschedules of swim lessons, which is "usually abnormal on a typical season." June's average high was reported at 86 degrees with an average temperature of 75, while July averaged a high of 93 with a maximum temperature of 108.
A five-year review of revenues and expenses covering 2022 through 2026 was provided to the board. Staff noted a downward trend in membership admissions in recent years and pointed to increased membership prices as a likely factor, along with the state's Sunflower Summer program, which offers discounted or free admission to attractions across Kansas. Staff said water parks were included in the program in 2024 but not in 2025 or 2026, most likely due to reductions in state funding.
Staff attributed rising operating expenses primarily to payroll and a pay plan adopted three or four years ago, while noting operating supply costs have stayed relatively steady. One board member noted expenses were lower this year than in prior years. Staff cautioned that some payroll, utility and minor repair expenses were still outstanding at the time of the report.
