Salina commission to consider building and plumbing code amendment ordinances

The Salina City Commission will consider Ordinances No. 26-11306, 26-11310 and 26-11311 on Monday, Nov. 9, amending Chapter 8 of the Salina Code to update local building code amendments and testing requirements under the 2018 Uniform Plumbing Code.

The ordinances would align local amendments with the 2018 International Building Code, Uniform Mechanical Code and Uniform Plumbing Code editions that took effect Jan. 1, 2026, including updated stairway references, swimming pool code citations and removal of outdated plumbing-fixture and mechanical electrical-connection amendments.

They would also formally allow smoke testing as an alternative to water testing of plastic drainage, waste and vent piping, matching an existing Building Services practice. The Building Advisory Board has recommended approval of the updates, according to a staff report from Deputy Community and Development Services Director Margy Clem.
