Salina commission to consider energy code change for low-energy equipment buildings
The Salina City Commission will consider Ordinance No. 26-11307 on Monday, Nov. 9, amending Chapter 8, Article 1, Division 6 of the Salina Code to add a local amendment to the city’s adopted 2009 International Energy Conservation Code.
The amendment would create an exemption path for certain low-energy and greenhouse-style equipment buildings from full building thermal envelope requirements, drawing on provisions found in newer IECC editions. Staff drafted the change after an Aug. 8, 2025, request from architect Charles Renz of Jones Gillam Renz on behalf of Great Plains Manufacturing for an air-tempering equipment accessory structure at 3861 S. 9th St.
The Building Advisory Board has recommended approval. Staff says the change would apply citywide rather than through a one-off variance.
