Salina to Resume Annual Fire Hydrant Flushing July 13
The City of Salina plans to restart its annual fire hydrant flushing program on Monday, July 13, after pausing the work following the June 8 windstorm.
According to the city, crews are still picking up limbs across Salina. Utilities crews will decide when to flush specific hydrants based on whether the work can be done safely without washing storm debris into the storm sewer system, which could cause backups and street flooding.
The city said the current plan is to flush the remaining fire hydrants and complete the work by July 30.
Residents may notice temporary changes in tap water color or sediment during flushing. The city said running water at the tap for one to two minutes should help clear the issue. Residents should avoid doing laundry if water is discolored.
The water remains safe to drink, but discolored water may stain laundry.
Hydrant flushing is a preventative maintenance process used to keep water lines clean, maintain water quality, and check fire hydrant operation across the distribution system.
Questions about the flushing activities may be directed to the City of Salina Utilities Department at 785-826-7305.
