City Commission to Choose Commissioner For Vacant Seat At Monday Meeting
The Salina City Commission is scheduled to nominate and appoint a new commissioner Monday from a field of 31 applicants.
The vacancy was created when Commissioner Jerry Ivey II resigned effective July 24. The person selected will serve the rest of the unexpired term, which ends Jan. 10, 2028.
Unless commissioners adopt a different process, the process will go as follows:
- The Mayor relinquishes the chair to the City Clerk
- Commissioners make nominations
- Nominations are closed
- The clerk then conducts a vote of the commissioners by roll call for each nominee in the order they are nominated.
- Each commissioner votes on each nomination until a nominee receives a 3-vote majority.
- The roll-call process is repeated as needed until one nominee receives a majority vote of the remaining commissioners
- Staff will prepare a resolution appointing the selected individual to the unexpired term ending in January 2028.
Upon adoption of the resolution, the appointee takes the oath of office and assumes the dutiesof City Commissioner.
Commissioners also have the option to table the appointment for a future meeting.
